Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #337

Posted by Ross K. Foad Sunday, October 18, 2020

Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:

BLISSFUL UNION

The alignment of Alexa Bliss to The Fiend has not been rushed, and even appeared to have been forgotten about for a spell, but slowly we saw Bliss slipping to the dark side, and I think that we were all willing it to happen.

The Fiend/Bray Wyatt was one of the best things to have come out of WWE last year, but some bad booking left the character waning somewhat, with many fearing that it was too far gone to ever get back to those heady SummerSlam 2019 heights.

Could this alliance change it?

It is exciting enough that Wyatt's drafting to Raw means that he has a whole new set of playmates to mess around with, but even more so now that he has play date to do it alongside too.

Looking forward to seeing where this one is going.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:

A MISSED OPPORTUNITY

It was a bizarre decision to have the Raw and SmackDown tag champs simply swap the belts after each team was moved in the draft, especially as The New Day had only just won theirs, but it was also a real missed opportunity.

With WWE’s penchant for breaking up duos, now, more than ever, would have been the perfect time to have done something that could have led to unifying the tag titles. That would have been perfect fodder for Survivor Series!

Unless WWE start adding some more into the mix, there simply is not the tag team Eco system to support two sets of titles without having the same few teams fight each over and over.

It was for this reason that they unified the World and WWE tag titles back in 2010, but the logic behind that seems to have been long forgotten. They do not need to be tri-branded, as the NXT set thrives on its own accord, but I would love to see a return to duel-branded titles. It would make them far more meaningful, as if they were travelling champions back in territory days.

Well, wrestling is cyclical, so maybe somewhere down the line…
