Statistics, Records and Trivia

WWE Hell in a Cell (HIAC) statistics, records and full match history are collected here, including a complete list of every Hell in a Cell match and result, winners, win-loss records, most wins, most appearances, longest and shortest matches, championship changes, women's records, event history and trivia.

Updated July 28, 2026 - through all 53 completed Hell in a Cell matches

Research and compilation credit: These statistics, calculations, classifications and historical notes were researched, compiled and maintained by Anthony Mango for Smark Out Moment. Reuse should include clear attribution and a link to this page.

Methodology: Completed matches only are included. Career totals merge alternate identities; team results apply to each wrestler; no contests and stoppages count as appearances without wins or losses. The June 15, 1998 televised no contest is used for primary W-L records, with the reported off-air fall explained in the Winners section. Listed-time calculations use one consistent adopted chronology totaling 19:54:17. Eight match durations have documented source conflicts; where noted, the adopted values are computational listings rather than WWE-certified official times. The possible sourced total range is 19:53:15 to 19:55:06.

June 15, 1998 classification: WWE retrospectives call the televised match a no contest, so the primary records are The Undertaker 7-6-1, Stone Cold Steve Austin 0-1-1, Kane 1-0-2 and Mick Foley 0-2-2. A later WWE overview lists The Undertaker with eight victories, apparently incorporating a reported post-broadcast fall credited to Austin and Undertaker in alternate chronologies. That alternate result is disclosed for historical context only and is not used in the primary tables. Using it would produce The Undertaker 8-6-0, Austin 1-1-0, Kane 1-1-1 and Foley 0-3-1; it would also raise the unique-winner total from 24 to 25 and add Undertaker to the three-match winning-streak tie. No title, time, event or format statistic changes.

Streak methodology: Winning and losing streaks are based on consecutive Hell in a Cell appearances, not consecutive calendar years. A no contest or match stoppage interrupts a win/loss streak because that appearance is neither a win nor a loss.

Repeat Opponent Record

No pair of opposing wrestlers has met inside Hell in a Cell more than twice. Team and multi-person matches count wrestlers on the opposing side as opponents.

*Match #2 has two documented layers: WWE's televised account identifies the broadcast ending without a decision, while later completed-match chronologies credit Stone Cold Steve Austin's pin of Mankind after Raw went off the air as a victory for Austin and The Undertaker. The primary career tables use the televised no-contest classification. The reported off-air fall is disclosed as an alternate historical chronology only and does not alter the primary W-L totals. The adopted 10:38 duration is a computational listing rather than a WWE-certified official time.

*The September 26, 2011 Raw dark match remains listed at the adopted 5:01 computational time. Other sources list 5:03 or 5:05; every verified value still makes it the shortest known Hell in a Cell match. All displayed totals consistently use 5:01 rather than mixing timing sources.

Documented Match-Duration Source ConflictsEight adopted computational times have conflicting published alternatives. The adopted chronology remains 19:54:17; the possible sourced total range is 19:53:15 to 19:55:06.OPEN CONFLICT TABLEHIDE CONFLICT TABLE
Documented source conflicts for eight adopted Hell in a Cell match durations
MatchAdoptedPublished AlternativesAdoption Rationale and Sources
#2 - Raw Is War (1998-06-15)10:3810:00 (Cagematch completed off-air layer); WWE publishes no official bell-to-bell time for the televised no contest.WWE is controlling for the televised result and classifies the match as a no contest, but it does not publish an official duration. Cagematch records the completed off-air layer as a 10:00 victory, while the generic chronology lists 10:38. These records describe different editorial layers and neither supplies a WWE-certified clock. The 10:38 value remains only to preserve the already reconciled Phase 2 chronology; the factual duration is unresolved and 10:00 is the verified lower alternative.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2
#3 - King of the Ring (1998-06-28)17:1017:38 (event-specific Wikipedia results table citing contemporary event reporting); 17:00 (Pro Wrestling Fandom chronology). No WWE-published official time was located. The event-specific table is more contextually specific and cites contemporary event reporting for 17:38; the lower-quality derivative chronology reports 17:00; the generic Cell chronology reports 17:10. Because the evidence does not converge, 17:10 remains only the unchanged computational value and the factual duration is unresolved.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2
#4 - Raw Is War (1998-08-24)7:417:30 (History of WWE exact Raw 1998 results page).Cagematch supplies an exact episode record and 7:41; History of WWE supplies an exact episode archive and 7:30; WWE confirms the match had no winner but publishes no duration. The two independent archival clocks conflict and neither is an official WWE time. The already adopted 7:41 remains computational only; the factual duration is unresolved.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2
#6 - No Way Out (2000-02-27)23:5723:58 (Pro Wrestling Fandom); 23:59 (Pro Wrestling History).WWE verifies the match, title, retirement stipulation and main-event status but does not publish a bell-to-bell time. An exact event recap reports 23:57, while two exact secondary event listings report 23:58 and 23:59. The one- and two-second differences are consistent with timing convention, but no authoritative official clock resolves them. The adopted value remains 23:57 for calculation continuity and the factual time is unresolved.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2
#19 - Hell in a Cell (2009-10-04)17:4818:02 (event-specific results table and its cited Pro Wrestling History archive).WWE confirms the participants, result and show-closing position but does not publish a duration. The event-specific results table and its cited archival source report 18:02; the generic match chronology reports 17:48. Event-specific sourcing is contextually stronger, but the Phase 2 value is retained only to avoid changing calculations without a primary clock. The factual duration is unresolved.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2
#22 - Raw (dark match) (2011-09-26)5:015:05 (Cagematch exact event); 5:03 (contemporary Bleacher Report article and Superluchas statistics article).WWE confirms that the Cell match occurred off air, identifies the participants and says Cena retained, but publishes no duration. The generic chronology reports 5:01, a contemporary article and later statistics article report 5:03, and the exact Cagematch event record reports 5:05. None is an official WWE clock. The already adopted 5:01 remains computational only; every verified value still makes this the shortest match.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2; Alternative source 3
#27 - Hell in a Cell (2013-10-27)13:4813:49 (event-specific Wikipedia table and Pro Wrestling Fandom event page).WWE verifies the match and result but does not publish a duration. The generic chronology reports 13:48, while two exact event-specific secondary pages report 13:49. The one-second difference likely reflects bell-timing convention, but no official clock resolves it. The adopted 13:48 remains computational only and the factual duration is unresolved.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2
#28 - Hell in a Cell (2013-10-27)22:0722:04 (event-specific results table).WWE verifies the vacant-title result, participants and special referee but does not publish a duration. The generic chronology reports 22:07 and the event-specific table reports 22:04. With no primary clock, neither secondary value is conclusive. The adopted 22:07 remains computational only and the factual duration is unresolved.
Adopted source 1; Alternative source 1; Alternative source 2

Calculation treatment: The displayed time records retain the approved adopted chronology so every total remains mechanically reproducible. These conflicts are disclosed rather than silently mixed. No wording here claims that all sources publish identical durations.

Championship-Winning Hell in a Cell Matches

Randy Orton holds the individual record with three championship captures inside Hell in a Cell: the WWE Championship from John Cena in 2009, the vacant WWE Championship against Daniel Bryan in 2013, and the WWE Championship from Drew McIntyre in 2020.

Business-data scope: Attendance figures are announced or reported totals and are not always paid attendance. The 2020 and 2021 events were held without paying fans. Traditional PPV buys are directly comparable through 2013; figures after the WWE Network launch exclude streaming views. Public gate reporting is incomplete, so the 2022 figure is presented as a known benchmark rather than a definitive all-time gate record.

*2013: The adopted 228,000 figure appears in WWE's SEC-filed comparative pay-per-view table. Wrestling Inc is secondary reporting based on WWE financial results. The 212,000 figure is retained only as a preliminary conflicting estimate. 2014 and 2015 traditional PPV buys exclude WWE Network streaming views and should not be compared directly with the 2009-2013 totals. Main-event methodology: A Cell match counts when it closed the advertised PPV/PLE or television broadcast. The September 26, 2011 Raw dark match is not treated as a broadcast main event. The June 15, 1998 Raw Cell is counted because it was the final televised match, regardless of its no-contest result. No Mercy 2002 is counted as a Cell main event; Unforgiven 2006 is not, because John Cena vs Edge in a TLC match closed that event.

Five Hell in a Cell matches in one calendar year is the record, set in 2021: one on SmackDown, two at Hell in a Cell, one on Raw and one at Crown Jewel.

2001 and 2025 are the only calendar years from 1997 through 2025 in which the completed-match chronology contains no Hell in a Cell match. WWE's July 2026 overview says the Cell appeared every year except one, but that sentence does not reconcile with WWE's stated total of 53 matches and the completed chronology. This page follows the match-by-match chronology. The announced SummerSlam 2026 match is not included until it takes place.

Twenty-three consecutive calendar years is the longest run with at least one completed Hell in a Cell match, spanning 2002 through 2024.

Other Historical Notes

  • Broadcast distribution: 48 completed Hell in a Cell matches occurred on PPV/PLE, four were televised weekly-show matches (Raw Is War on June 15, 1998; Raw Is War on August 24, 1998; SmackDown on June 18, 2021; and Raw on June 21, 2021), and one was the untelevised Raw dark match on September 26, 2011. Total: 53.
  • Four Cell matches in four days: WWE held one on SmackDown on June 18, two at Hell in a Cell on June 20 and one on Raw on June 21, 2021.
  • Back-to-back days: Bobby Lashley is the only wrestler to compete inside Hell in a Cell on consecutive days, facing Drew McIntyre on June 20 and Xavier Woods on June 21, 2021.
  • Money in the Bank connection: Braun Strowman's 2018 Universal Championship match against Roman Reigns was his announced Money in the Bank cash-in.
  • Only Hell in a Cell match won by a pinfall on top of the Cell: Triple H def. Chris Jericho at Judgment Day 2002 after hitting a Pedigree on the roof of the structure.

Structure Notes

WWE's July 2026 material describes the modern Hell in a Cell as a 20-foot-high, five-ton structure. WWE's own historical measurements have varied by version: a 2006 retrospective described the original 1997 Cell as 15 feet high, while the enlarged Cell that debuted at Unforgiven 2006 was described as 20 feet tall, 3,500 square feet and two tons. The structure surrounds both the ring and ringside area, differentiating it from a standard steel cage. WWE introduced the crimson-red Cell in 2018 and returned to a retro-silver structure for Edge vs "The Demon" Finn Balor at WrestleMania 39 in 2023.

Scope note: Notable WWE uses of the Hell in a Cell structure that are not counted as official Hell in a Cell matches include the Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Kane First Blood match at King of the Ring 1998, the Al Snow vs Big Boss Man Kennel from Hell match at Unforgiven 1999, a John Cena/Randy Orton Raw gauntlet-match brawl in 2009 and a Raw handicap street fight involving John Cena, Dean Ambrose, Kane, Randy Orton and Seth Rollins in 2014. Those appearances are excluded from every match and competitor total on this page.
