Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling: 9/17/2017

Posted by Ross K. Foad Sunday, September 17, 2017
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN
WORDS

There is a twofold reason Goldust vs. Bray Wyatt on Monday Night Raw gets my Cheap Pop vote this week. Firstly, have we ever seen this match before? Yes, but not for three years! That is increasingly rare for any set of wrestlers since the brand split. So, the sheer novelty was fun to see. Secondly, Bray's post-match psychology after the match actually made sense! The symbolism behind scrubbing away at Goldust's face paint was loud and clear. Behind the makeup lay a man who Bray could beat, and this is exactly what is going to happen to Finn Balor.

Regular readers of my column will know that I like Bray a lot, but find the rambling promos leave me feeling anything but invested in his feuds. However, this simple act was universally understandable even without dialogue.

Now, does that not sound more like the actions of the God Bray claims to be?

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
MILKING IT

Milking the cows dry came to mind when watching the third verbal joust in as many weeks between John Cena and Roman Reigns. Do not get me wrong, this was still an enjoyable segment, but the weakest of the three thus far. John Cena still had plenty of zingers in him (including a drug test fail reference!) but Roman Reigns floundered having little material left to draw from. John Cena buries people you say? Interesting! What else have you got?

His accusation that John Cena has never had a good match was baseless, and a no-no in the Chris Jericho book of wrestling promos. Make out your opponent is good, but that you are better. Where does beating someone that you have denounced as a joke get you? Ditto to saying that John Cena is failing at Hollywood. We all know that is untrue.

Yes, John Cena is still killing it with these, but Roman Reigns could be in danger of killing his own character if WWE is not careful.

So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
