WWE Backlash 2025 Spoilers |
Singles Match for the Undisputed WWE Championship: John Cena (c) vs. Randy Orton
How long has it been since I had to write that sentence of a match that was taking place? I feel so old. This is technically like if WrestleMania 16 in 2000 featured people in their prime from WrestleMania 1. BTW, not even Big Boss Man was around at that time, and he was the most tenured and oldest person on that card. Wild.
Obviously, Cena isn't losing the title here. It's far too early for that, and Orton's the perfect opponent to put his belt in jeopardy and check off a dream match while also getting major boos for when Cena beats the hometown hero, ideally by cheating and doing something Orton would have done back in 2009.
I don't have high hopes for the quality of the match, but I'm excited for the storytelling.
PREDICTION: John Cena retains.
Singles Match for the Women's Intercontinental Championship: Lyra Valkyria (c) vs. Becky Lynch
Two options here: either Becky Lynch wins the title, or they specifically drag this out by having Lyra Valkyria retain, only to have a rematch in the future where Becky wins. That will be done just for the purpose of stalling for time and "giving Lyra a win" in a sense, but it'll end up in the same space. I can't imagine WWE isn't going to put the title on Lynch eventually, if it doesn't just happen here. For my money, I'd rather just cut to the chase.
PREDICTION: Becky Lynch wins the title.
Gunther vs. Pat McAfee
This is the follow-up to Gunther losing the World Heavyweight Championship? Ugh. I'm not feeling it. Even if this were a squash, which wouldn't be that interesting, where would Gunther go from here? A win over McAfee means nothing.
I'd have probably kept Gunther off television for a longer time frame so people yearned to see him return. At the very least, I was hoping there would be a better plan in place than just The Ring General beating up a commentator.
PREDICTION: Gunther wins.
