Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #287

Posted by Ross K. Foad Saturday, November 2, 2019
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
MIST YOU PAIGE

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how much I was enjoying the new-found winning streak and direction that the Kabuki Warriors were taking, and one of the improvements that I was particularly pleased about was the apparent dropping of Paige as their manager. I get that WWE wanted to give her something to do, and that they thought the native Japanese speakers needed a mouth piece, but this was ultimately both underwhelming and unnecessary. As such, I was not best pleased to see Paige rock up on Raw as if she been there every step of the way for the Warriors.

Thankfully, I did not need to worry too much, as she was quickly interrupted by mic snatches from both Asuka and Kairi, and then found herself on the receiving end of the green mist. Was the aim to garner heel heat? If so, then mission accomplished. The attending fans booed them big time for their heinous actions, but, being the human anime villains that they now are, the tag champs merely laughed it up and took great delight in Paige’s misfortune.

I was fine with WWE giving us no explanation as to why Paige was no longer managing them, but I appreciate that they decided to go back and tie up the loose ends here. This was a fun and unexpected segment, and made for a great opening segment to the show. More like this please!

BONUS POP: The NXT Invasion - What an awesome episode of SmackDown that was. Also, that they put it together so quickly is commendable. I am looking forward to seeing where this goes. Plus, it bodes well for the future if this is the sort of show Triple H can arrange for the main roster.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
CAINED

Well, Cain Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar happened.

Blink and you might have missed it, but it happened, and I am not sure that I want it to happen again. Colour me unimpressed. What was the purpose of this squash? Brock's ego?

Somehow, in the context of a wrestling ring, the UFC style just came across as clumsy, and almost like a school boy fight. Cain has supposedly been doing some wrestling down in Mexico, but he hardly got a chance to show it. Tyson Fury, who had only just done a crash course at the performance centre, managed to come out looking far more suited for this world.

Ironically, it is the former who is signed to WWE long-term.

I know which one I would rather see again.

So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
