Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #341

Posted by Ross K. Foad Saturday, November 14, 2020

Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:

A WEASLEY WIN

SmackDown knocked it out of the park with the match quality this week, and it is hard for me to choose a favourite, but I am going to have to go with Sami Zayn vs. Apollo Crews. Why? Because I believe that Sami Zayn is working wonders as the Intercontinental Champion.

He cares about, brags about it, and makes a point of it being better than the United States title. This attachment to the belt does not come along as often as you would think, with The Miz being my go to answer for exemplary representation, but Sami has all the potential to go down as a very memorable champion. It does not matter that, as shown in his defense against Apollo, he typically wins in weasley ways.

It suits his character to outsmart or cheat his way to victory, and it is always fun to see him squeak out a victory that way.

I loved that Miz and Maryse would do this when he held the championship, and I am down for, what I hope is, a very long reign littered with narrow escapes by the skin of his teeth.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:

A GENERAL QUERY

What is Adam Pearce? I mean, really? I like the guy, and I like that there is a quasi-management figure in place again, but can we not have a little more detail here? He just arrived one day and had match making authority, but nobody ever explained why.

He clearly acts as something of a on-screen show runner, but, as far as I have noted, the closest that we have ever come to a job title is that he is a WWE official. Great! But so is a referee.

Refreshingly, his alignment is of a neutral nature, but most of the time he just goes along with what the wrestlers pitch him anyway. Even when he is not on screen, wrestlers stress how they have got the ok from Adam Pearce, thus making it clear that he has authority, yet WWE continues to skirt around what exactly he is.

I am starting to think that Vince McMahon has simply added General Manager to his long list of words that he has a bizarre disdain for..
