WWE Pitch: Call Up Gallus to Main Roster & Pair with Drew McIntyre

Posted by Anthony Mango - Wednesday, March 6, 2024

Here's a foolproof pitch to WWE: Gallus needs to be brought up to the main roster either at WrestleMania XL or right after and paired with Drew McIntyre.

It's so simple that I think if it doesn't happen, it's a huge missed opportunity. Frankly, it might be the only thing that saves the careers of Gallus.

Let's be frank. Gallus had been a mainstay of NXT UK, but they've struggled to break into the more popular section of the totem pole for NXT in America. Yes, they've had some success, but even their tag title run was as bland as could be. For the most part, they've been sitting out a lot of time and just waiting around for something to do.

This feud with Ridge Holland isn't going to last much longer, if it is even going to continue at all. It seems like he's moved on to Shawn Spears. So what are they going to do next?

I would have them in the running for this tag team elimination setup to determine who fights The Wolf Dogs. They absolutely do not deserve to get that title shot, so they'd inevitably lose to someone else, even if it's Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson in the finals or however WWE plans on doing this.

Then what? Nothing of note, I'd assume. So if they're going to just linger around in NXT being a tag team for others to beat to move up the pecking order, I have a better idea in mind.

Seth Rollins is going to lose the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XL. Whether it happens to Drew McIntyre or a Money in the Bank cash-in from Damian Priest, I don't think The Visionary is walking out with the title.

Ignoring all the chaos of Rollins being involved with The Rock and Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes—it's a complete mess that WWE should've seen coming from a mile away and booked better—Rollins is going to now fight on Night 1 in a tag match before defending his title on Night 2.

Clearly, he should lose that fight. He's going in injured AND beaten up from the previous night against a fresh Drew, who is bigger, a heel willing to cheat, and has more to gain by becoming the next champion.

I wouldn't go so far as to have Gallus interfere to cost Rollins. McIntyre can win clean. It'd be better for him and Rollins has the excuse.

AFTER that, though, is when I'd like to see McIntyre bring the Gallus boys in to be his backup.

All of them are Scottish. They've got that connection. They're all heels. McIntyre and Wolfgang are particularly close, it seems. And bringing in Gallus to the main roster makes another tag team in the rounds to freshen up some matches and have them against folks like The Judgment Day, DIY, Awesome Truth, etc.

Ideally, I'd like to see this play out before the 2024 WWE Draft, or I'd keep them out of the draft and have this happen as an off-draft switch. I'd want them to be a surprise, rather than just joining the Raw roster and then transitioning to being Drew's buddies.

Have them come out on some episode of Monday Night Raw when McIntyre is feuding with someone new post-Rollins—maybe someone who has allies of his own who can fight Gallus in the mix, like Bobby Lashley with The Street Profits or whomever—Gallus can roll in, beat someone up for McIntyre, and we've got a 4-man power faction that can freshen things up.

Ideally, we're looking at McIntyre as world champion, Joe Coffey in contention for midcard gold, Mark Coffey and Wolfgang in the ranks for the tag team titles. Realistically, even if it's just Gallus backing up McIntyre and not accomplishing much on their own, I think just by being associated with him, they'll have a much easier time transitioning on the main roster than if they just came up and we had to play that game where WWE reintroduces them to unfamiliar audiences.

Book it, WWE. And when you do, keep that in mind for how I've sent in my application to be on the WWE Creative writing team.

WWE Creative License: Fantasy Booking The Bloodline at Survivor Series 2022 & More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, September 17, 2022

Welcome to another edition of WWE CREATIVE LICENSE—a spin-off of Fantasy Booking that dives a bit deeper into the idea of full creative control.

This segment opens up the fan fiction concept to more than just setting up an entire card and instead, revolves around generalized pitches for story ideas, ways to repackage characters, brainstorming brand new creative strategies and so on.

For this edition, I'll be focusing on something that I've seen pitched by several people as a potential part of the Survivor Series 2022 card: Could WWE put The Bloodline in a Survivor Series match this year?

I think there's a chance it happens, but that it isn't likely. So before we get closer to that event and it becomes either more of a reality set in stone or a guaranteed no chance, I'd like to present my balancing act of how I would go about booking that team's opposition and the rest of the card for Survivor Series 2022. I hope you enjoy the pitch!

Phase 1) Names Off the Board

I'm working under the assumption the 2022 WWE Draft doesn't take place before this to shuffle the rosters around. Also, nobody gets called up from NXT in the meantime, despite Solo Sikoa's random insertion onto the SmackDown brand.

I'm also going to handicap myself by not being able to use anyone who is currently MIA for any reason. That means no injured stars like Randy Orton or Rick Boogs, no kayfabe injuries like Edge, and no talent like Naomi, Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair, who are gone, but could theoretically pop up at any moment.

That limits us quite a bit, and when you take out the Superstars who won't turn any heads because they're just enhancement talent, the list to pull from gets whittled down to a smaller pool.

Phase 2) A Basic Match Lineup Structure

Normally, Survivor Series has Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown for the men and women, then all the champions against each other, and something else peppered in—maybe a random challenge, a women's tag team championship match, etc.

Since Roman Reigns and The Usos hold both brand's set of belts for those divisions, you can either have them defend the titles or not be on this card at all. I'm choosing the route of The Bloodline in a five-on-five match against "people from Raw and SmackDown, because it doesn't matter if it isn't brand warfare for this match as nobody wins anything if Raw or SmackDown comes out on top anyway."

But on top of that, I would go with Bobby Lashley vs. Gunther for the United States / Intercontinental challenge. For the Raw and SmackDown Women's Championship situation, I think we'll be looking at Bianca Belair vs. Ronda Rousey. Sorry, Liv Morgan fans. She's still on this card.

That means we need five men and women from Raw and SmackDown to go with the champion matches, then five more men from either brand to fight The Bloodline, and maybe one other match on the card.

That final match, to me, is better off being another women's match. So let's book the Women's Tag Team Championship on the line, taking four more women off the table. I'm expecting Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky to still be champions, and for their opponents, let's feed them Shotzi and Xia Li, I guess. Boy would I like this division to be better. Maybe there's enough time to build up those two as a team to justify a title shot.

Phase 3) Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown for the Women's Division

Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Bayley and Rhea Ripley are set for Team Raw. They're the biggest names you can put in there. That leaves one more spot, which would ideally go to a returning person like Carmella or Zelina Vega just for fun, but since I'm not counting them as options, we're left with Doudrop, Nikki A.S.H., Dana Brooke, Tamina or Sonya Deville (as she's not listed as a Raw or SmackDown star right now). I'd go with Deville, as she's the most standout of the bunch. If not, Doudrop, but they'd have to rehab her in the meantime.

For SmackDown, let's go with Liv Morgan, Natalya, Raquel Rodriguez and Shayna Baszler and guarantees. That fifth option could be either Aliyah or Lacey Evans. Considering the former is mostly a jobber and the latter is on wonky ground, take your pick, but it would depend to me on how you want to book this match. If you're looking for a quick elimination to cut down on time, go with Aliyah. If you want to make it seem like the scales are more even, go with Evans. For my money's worth, I think bigger stars makes more sense, so I'll pick Evans as the final member of this team.

Settling on the women's division teams is much easier than the men's.

Phase 4) Picks for The Bloodline's Opponents and Men's Raw and SmackDown Teams

You need solid names to contend with The Bloodline, or it'll be a blowout. However, you can't leave Raw and SmackDown hanging. They need good representatives for those brands, too.

Logically, Drew McIntyre has to be on the anti-Bloodline team. I think Kevin Owens is another obvious pick to offset Sami Zayn. One from Raw, one from SmackDown.

We need to keep McIntyre away from Karrion Kross, so let's put Kross on Team SmackDown. Likewise, Matt Riddle needs to stay away from Seth Rollins. Since Riddle's had beef with The Bloodline, he goes on that team and Rollins goes on Team Raw.

Ricochet and Shinsuke Nakamura have had issues with The Bloodline, but I think we can do better than both on the same team. Let's go Ricochet on anti-Bloodline and Nakamura on Team SmackDown.

Lastly, Madcap Moss has popped up as another ally against The Bloodline. When he gets put on that team, we're left with SmackDown still needing three people and Raw still needing four.

Johnny Gargano is a given for Team Raw. Even though he's feuding with Austin Theory, I think those two need to be on this team and give some tension to the group. But you can have some fun with it by having Tommaso Ciampa there, too. The Miz and/or Dexter Lumis works, too, but I like the idea of Gargano having two of his former teammates who he's feuded with and to stop Lumis from getting overexposed or for The Miz to just play a quick loss. He can be ringside to support Ciampa, if need be. Big fan of The Miz, but let's highlight Ciampa to keep things fresh.

Rounding out that team, I think Omos makes sense to represent Raw. He's huge. Why wouldn't you want him as an anchor?

To compensate, SmackDown puts Braun Strowman on their team. Let's see the two big guys go at it. They can even eliminate each other in a double count-out.

Baron Corbin is a great Survivor Series teammate. He can either be a big guy, the heel who costs the team an elimination, a comedic person who gets taken out fast, or a surprise solid guy taking other people out. He'd also balance out Rollins or Theory, in a way, as the rude guy who is full of himself and would potentially rather further his ego than win the match.

Lastly, Sheamus on Team SmackDown. The Brawling Brute is a former champion of all sorts of belts and would be another babyface (seemingly, at this point) who can offset Corbin and Kross and argue with them, maybe even starting a feud with Kross out of this.

Phase 5) Final Card for Survivor Series 2022

Here's what we're working with, after it's all said and done, in order of how I would present the card's lineup.

Women's Team Raw: Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Bayley, Rhea Ripley and Sonya Deville vs. Women's Team SmackDown: Lacey Evans, Liv Morgan, Natalya, Raquel Rodriguez and Shayna Baszler

United States Champion Bobby Lashley vs. Intercontinental Champion Gunther

Women's Tag Team Championship Match: Damage CTRL (c) vs. Shotzi and Xia Li

Men's Team Raw: Austin Theory, Johnny Gargano, Omos, Seth Rollins and Tommaso Ciampa vs. Men's Team SmackDown: Baron Corbin, Braun Strowman, Karrion Kross, Sheamus and Shinsuke Nakamura

Raw Women's Champion Bianca Belair vs. SmackDown Women's Champion Ronda Rousey

The Bloodline vs. Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, Madcap Moss, Matt Riddle and Ricochet

I think that balances out rather well. Most of the big names are on the card. The ones who aren't, like Judgment Day, don't get along with other teams, and we're in the interest of keeping certain people apart. Women's and men's matches are separated, as are tag team matches and singles matches, for the most part.

Team SmackDown wins for the women with Raquel being highlighted as sole survivor. Gunther beats Lashley. Kai and Sky retain.  Team Raw wins for the men after Kross gets sucker-kicked by Sheamus and someone like Theory is able to just capitalize with a quick pin. Rousey beats Belair. It ends with Roman Reigns winning for his team and asserting his dominance above all brands as crossover champion.

WWE Creative License: How to End King Corbin's Reign of Terror

Posted by Anthony Mango - Monday, August 31, 2020

Welcome to the first spin-off of the Fantasy Booking segment, dubbed WWE CREATIVE LICENSE.

This segment opens up the fan fiction concept to more than just setting up an entire card and instead, revolves around generalized pitches for story ideas, ways to repackage characters, brainstorming brand new creative strategies and so on.

For this edition, I'll be focusing on something that randomly came into my mind after this past episode of SmackDown with the Matt Riddle and King Corbin feud: How should King Corbin end his run as King of the Ring?

At the moment, here's how I would go about writing that angle. I hope you enjoy the pitch!

Phase 1) Take the Crown Off

Matt Riddle is The King of Bros. Baron Corbin is The King of the Ring. They're clearly still feuding with each other and since neither of them has a title to put up for grabs, something else should be on the line other than random wins and losses. Bragging points only get you so far.

Corbin should feel so insulted that Riddle calls himself the king of anything that he should try to force him to give up that moniker. In response, Riddle should set a stipulation that whoever wins their next match can no longer call themselves king.

Corbin's bravado will allow him to accept the challenge. After all, he's clearly going to win, right? And when he does that, he'll show everyone why he's the real king of WWE and why posers like Riddle should just shut their mouths and bow down.

Of course...he doesn't win, does he? He can't win or there's no point in this article existing.

I'd even go so far as to have it be a No Disqualification match that ends with Riddle breaking Corbin's scepter over his head to add insult to injury. Maybe make a prop one that can break more easily and let Corbin keep that and the crown as mementos for his career or file them away in the WWE warehouse.

Phase 2) Rub It In His Face

After this, announce that there will be a new King of the Ring tournament, now that the position has been left vacant.

This will make Corbin FURIOUS, because he still should be the rightful king and WWE has no right in doing this, nor does any superstar have the right in entering the tournament. It's blasphemy! It's lese-majeste! This is treason! Rabble rabble rabble!

Over the course of the next episode or two of SmackDown, anyone who tries to qualify for the King of the Ring tournament is met with Corbin either attempting to appeal to their heart by asking them not to enter, or he outright attacks them in the hopes that he can take out the competition. For you see, he plans to enter and win back his crown.

Corbin will get the opportunity to be one of those 16 superstars after he wins some qualifying match (against who doesn't matter. Maybe Shorty G, just to make it interesting, as he can no longer provide the king's ransom).

Phase 3) The Tournament

The 2020 King of the Ring Tournament is split up between Raw and SmackDown. Actually, if you want to make it even more interesting, you add more to the mix and make it an NXT affair, too, with the finals being a Triple Threat, but that's probably too ambitious for WWE and would be too fun, so let's just assume it's a standard main roster situation.

Eight men on Raw, eight men on SmackDown (and eight men on NXT if that's involved) compete over the next few weeks, giving fans something to track, with the conclusion taking place at Clash of Champions.

Week 1, guess what happens? Baron Corbin gets eliminated! Maybe it's Matt Riddle who does it, and Corbin can screw Riddle out of a future round by interfering. Then again, if we want to pivot away from the Riddle/Corbin story, maybe it's just someone else like Big E, Daniel Bryan, Drew Gulak, Jeff Hardy, Jey Uso, or Otis. It has to be a babyface, though, so they can get the boost.

The rest of the tournament plays out with Corbin seething at the idea that someone else is going to take his identity.

Phase 4) The Next Feud

Eventually, a new King of the Ring is crowned. Since Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, Bray Wyatt and others are top heels on SmackDown, there isn't much left for someone like Corbin to do there, so I'd move him over to Raw and have one of those guys win it.

Corbin would attack this person and start a feud with them over how upset he is that that guy is now King of the Ring.

King Ricochet was a thing before. Why not do that again? It would give him something new to his personality. If not him, there's Apollo Crews, Cedric Alexander, Dolph Ziggler, Keith Lee, Murphy, Mustafa Ali and even Andrade. A heel King of the Ring works better every single time, but a babyface would work better for this scenario, so let's go with Ricochet or Ali, most likely.

This person would feud with Corbin for a little while until WWE would be ready to move on to something else.

Then, the resolution to it, as babyface KOTR winners don't make much sense being all pompous, is that the babyface wins the feud but then stops outright calling himself king. You know why? Well, because it's an ego trip that only a loser like Baron Corbin would actually want to do. Ricochet/Ali isn't going to parade himself around like someone at a renaissance fair. Pfffft. Corbin, people have been laughing at you, bro. (Keep in mind, I'm actually a Baron Corbin fan. This is just what you do to a character like his.)

Phase 5) End of Days

Coming out of that realization and losing the crown, Corbin can shift his character around. He'll be on Raw now, so he can tap into the Raw Underground angle and get into his boxing roots. Remember, he's a former Golden Gloves winner, so he should fair well in that field.

This can allow for a change in his ring gear and his overall persona (to a certain extent). It may even open up an opportunity for him to turn babyface down the line if fans start digging this more vicious side.

Voila. You've taken the crown off Corbin, set up a new King of the Ring, had a tournament that takes up some time and builds to an important match at Clash of Champions, moved someone over to a new roster without taking up a draft pick, given Raw Underground a new character to play with, built up another midcarder to a higher level and given Corbin a refresh with his character all in one go.
