Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #313

Posted by Ross K. Foad Sunday, May 3, 2020
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
LIV AGAIN

This past week saw an impressive win from Liv Morgan over Ruby Riott for the second time in a row. Yes, you heard that right. No fifty-fifty booking here.

Indeed, this decisive defeat over her former faction leader has me wondering whether we might get a second attempt at a Liv Morgan push. Of course, by itself, the victories alone would make this premature thinking, but let us not discount her new Oblivion finisher too.

New finishers are rarely made a big fuss about on commentary for nothing. In addition, her most recent post match interview hinted that she was done with being a lesbian, and that she was still young and trying to find out who she was. Is this a blow for LGBTQ representation? Well, given how weakly WWE used it, probably not.

Yes, it was not Shakespeare, but that they bothered to give it some form of closure means they must care somewhat where Liv goes from here. Could she become a number one contender? With her ever improving skill set, and a dire need for Becky to have a new opponent, it is something that surely makes perfect sense in this ever-increasing crazy world.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
CURTIS AXED

With an estimated forty percent of WWE's workforce cut on last fortnight's infamous Black Wednesday, you would think that the rest were safe for a while.

Well, think again.

This past week saw the singular release in the form of the long serving Curtis Axel, which, while not  surprising, does pose the question of are we actually done? It follows just a few days after the release of Cain Velasquez, who you would have thought WWE would have loved to have kept on their books for the kudos and future Saudi matches. At least, they would have when they were in stock pile mode.

The release of Curtis also begs the question of why not his B-Team brethren, Bo Dallas? Being related to the merchandise machine that is Bray Wyatt did nothing to save IRS, but maybe they realised that getting rid of two Windham's would not go down well come Wyatt's contract expiry date.

Well, at least that is what I choose to BOlieve.

Otherwise, Bo, and maybe more, might not be long for the WWE Universe.

So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
