WWE WrestleMania Backlash 2022 Preview - Triple Threat POV

Posted by Dallas Allsopp Saturday, April 30, 2022

Welcome to another edition of Triple Threat from Smark Out Moment, where three of us get together to discuss three questions based on one big topic going down in the week of professional wrestling.

This week, Dallas Allsopp, Aaron Young and Robert DeFelice preview WrestleMania Backlash 2022.

This coming weekend marks the first pay-per-view following WrestleMania 38 - but is it more than just a rehash of that glorious show?

Question 1: Edge vs AJ Styles - who comes out on top? Does Edge need the victory to give some legitimacy to his new stable, Judgement Day?

ALLSOPP: I am a big fan of Edge’s current persona, and whilst Damian Priest was not my preferred choice for an ally, he does show promise. Therefore, it would make perfect sense for Edge to eek out a victory thanks to the support of Priest. It keeps AJ Styles looking strong and sympathetic, whilst Edge and Damian Proest look like the arseholes we want to hate.

YOUNG: Edge, yes. Unless Damian Priest costs Edge the match and joins AJ Styles, which makes little sense.

DeFELICE: AJ Styles has to squeak by with a victory here so that he can go to Hell in a Cell with Edge, and they can have a banger of a match there. I even enjoy the character work, but my God, Styles, in terms of dream matches, has been snakebitten where they try to over emphasize character work where people just want to see great matches. I’m looking forward to it, but not as much as I was with the first match, and not nearly as much as I will be with a potential Cell match.

Question 2: Do you expect Charlotte Flair to successfully defend her WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship against Ronda Rousey? Will their match surpass the quality of their encounter at WrestleMania 38?

YOUNG: No. Ronda Rousey should win. She is getting more comfortable on the microphone, and it would look bad to have her lose twice in a row. That second question is tougher, because we won't know until they fight. Perhaps they have more chemistry this time around, but I will say yes.

DeFELICE: This rivalry really hasn’t clicked for me, and I think that this match should mean so much more than it is, but I expect a really good match here. I expect Ronda Rousey to get the victory and have a nice little run going into the Summer where she would likely be a major part of SummerSlam and Clash at the Castle in September.

ALLSOPP: I do expect The Queen to retain. Despite the best efforts of Ronda Rousey, she is floundering on SmackDown. In order to rectify this, she needs to lose, and lose decisively. Let this be the genesis of a new, badder version of Rousey. This is why I anticipate a much better contest than the awful encounter we were treated to at WrestleMania.

Question 3: Who comes out on top in the Winner Takes All match - The Usos or RK-Bro?

DeFELICE: Despite the addition of Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns to the match on Friday Night SmackDown, I still think The Bloodline will leave the event with all the gold somehow.

ALLSOPP: The Usos. Only so we can continue the admittedly satisfying story of The Bloodline conquering WWE. RK-Bro can afford to take the loss, especially if it leads to the long awaited implosion of the team. For as entertaining as they have been as a united force, I am looking forward to Riddle becoming a made man by defeating Randy Orton.

YOUNG: The Usos. RK-Bro can split if WWE chooses that path. The Bloodline needs to be the most dominant stable in WWE.

Those are our thoughts on the issue, but where do you stand?
