Women's Wrestling Weekly Recap & Review #295

Posted by Dallas Allsopp Monday, September 7, 2020
Welcome to another edition of WOMEN'S WRESTLING WEEKLY—a rundown of the events which have transpired in the world of women's professional wrestling over the past several days not just with the Superstars on WWE programming, but with Impact Wrestling's Knockouts, ROH's Women of Honor, and even a glimpse at the women on the independent circuit.

WWE Monday Night Raw

Mickie James vs Lana

Mickie James finally had an opportunity to underline the threat she poses to the rest of Raw's women's division as she took on Lana, who in turn posed no challenge to her whatsoever.

James quickly wrapped up the match with a Mick Kick, pinning Lana to secure the victory. As a match this was poor, but it was great to see James presented as a threat.

Winner: Mickie James
Rating: 2/5

The Riott Squad vs The IIconics

The losers of this match would be forced to disband, therefore there was a higher level of intrigue to the contest.

Despite being awful singles wrestlers, The IIconics are a decent tag team on Raw, which meant they were the favourites going into this match. The Riott Squad were not to be beaten though, with Ruby Riott securing the pinfall victory for her team.

The IIconics cried in the ring as the realisation dawned over them that they would no longer be a team. As a match, this was ok, but it worked so well as a storyline.

Winner: The Riott Squad
Rating: 2/5

WWE SmackDown

Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler vs Bayley & Sasha Banks

This was a Payback rematch, and although not at the same level of that match, it was interesting and entertaining nonetheless.

Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax never really looked like losing, with Baszler being presented as the strongest wrestler in the match once more. Jax hit a Cross Body off the top rope onto both Bayley and Sasha Banks for a double pinfall.

Post match, Bayley turned on Banks by truly decimating her. The contest was fun, but the post match attack was so much better.

Winner: Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler
Rating: 3.5/5

Honourable Mention

They finally imploded!

WWE NXT

Candice LeRae vs Kacy Catanzaro

This was a simple squash to build up Candice LeRae as a threat to Tegan Nox. One Dragon Curb Stomp later and LeRae easily pinned Kacy Catanzaro with little effort.

Winner: Candice LeRae
Rating: 2/5

AEW Dynamite

Thunder Rosa vs Serena Deeb

This was the debut of both Thunder Rosa and Serena Deeb in AEW, however the match was not the mere formality I assumed it would have been.

Deeb more than held her own in this match, getting in a considerable amount of offense on Rosa. Rosa was too strong for Deeb to overcome though, with Deeb falling to a Thunder Driver.

The match was entertaining, but Jim Ross shitting on the match was a real shame. It wasn't as bad as he was making out, but his commentary will have negatively impacted some people's perception of the match.

Winner: Thunder Rosa
Rating: 3/5

Impact Wrestling

Taya Valkyrie vs Rosemary

This was yet another Wrestle House match, although it was not as bad as some of the recent offerings from Wrestle House.

Taya Valkyrie and Rosemary both put on a serviceable match, with Valkyrie taking the pinfall victory following a Road to Valhalla. Whilst not amazing, it was at least entertaining.

Winner: Taya Valkyrie
Rating: 2.5/5

AEW All Out 2020

Britt Baker vs Big Swole

This was a Tooth and Nail match, therefore this was an opportunity to hide the fact that Britt Baker is not 100% in a cinematic match.

Big Swole started the segment well by taking out Reba and unloading on Baker, before The Roll Model was able to take out Swole and put her in the dentist's chair. Baker attempted to knock out Swole with a syringe, only to accidentally inject herself. Baker passed out to give Swole the victory.

This was odd, but it wasn't bad. It was clear Baker was still some way from her best, but she and Swole did well to overcome that handicap. It was entertaining, although slightly strange.

Winner: Big Swole
Rating: 3/5

Hikaru Shida vs Thunder Rosa

Hikaru Shida has been the shining light of AEW's women's division, whilst Thunder Rosa came into this match as the reigning NWA Women's Champion. This made for an interesting dynamic, especially when the talent of both women was taken into consideration.

The action was hellacious and stiff, with both women getting in a good level of offense on each other. Rosa had opportunities to put Shida away, but the AEW Women's Champion was able to secure the pinfall victory following a Running Knee to retain her title.

This was one of the best matches at All Out, and I would love to see a rematch between these two. Shida once again showed how talented she is, whilst Rosa made a number of new fans.

Winner: Hikaru Shida
Rating: 4/5

MATCH OF THE WEEK:
Hikaru Shida vs Thunder Rosa

This was easily the best match of the week. It was a great inter promotional match, with Hikaru Shida showing once again how dominant she is as AEW Women's Champion.

WOMAN OF THE WEEK:
Bayley

Bayley finally turned on Sasha Banks to become one of the biggest heels in the company. She had previously been one of the most annoying whilst she teamed up with her best friend, but she is now a cold hearted badass. I hope she uses this to become the most hated woman in the company. This truly was an important event for Bayley.

So there you have it, the breakdown for the week in women's wrestling. What were some of your favorite and least favorite moments from these women? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
