Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #221

Posted by Ross K. Foad Friday, July 27, 2018
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
VIPE OUT

Randy Orton is boring. That is a phrase that you have probably heard a few times over the past decade. It is also a statement that I can, for the most part, agree upon. As a standalone character, there is something dull about a guy in black trunks whose main shtick is that he is a bit of dick. However, with the right story or feud, Orton can become very interesting indeed.

His latest incarnation, as the Legend Killer who became a legend, sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun. The idea of him taking out each long tenured and beloved superstar is clearly going to bring out the best in him. It is often said that Orton does not try hard if he is not into what he is doing, but I do not think that this is going to be an issue this time around. Judging by his last promo, he seems really keen on it. Also, like how the brief Team Hell No Reunion was made masterful by embracing the past, I love how the story is playing off something Randy did a decade ago. How’s that for long-term booking?

Ok, I do not actually have any anyone thought about this ten years ago, but it looks set to be a good angle nevertheless.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
TAG TEAM TEDIUM

Is there going to be a worse story than the Banks/Bayley relationship in 2018? After those diabolic counseling sessions, I did not see how it could possibly get any worse. More fool me!

All is forgiven and forgotten, and Banks now loves Bayley. No real heel turn, no big event blow off, and seemingly no repercussions. They are now a team, and that is that. Why does it this annoy me so? Well, poor story aside, I feel that is almost written in stone that women's tag titles are coming, and here are your handpicked winners.

That idea of them finally putting differences aside to challenge for the belts could have been great if told right, but it has not even come close to justifying such a conclusion. I just feel that I already knew how this story will end before it even began. Maybe, just maybe, Bayley will still turn on Banks in the end, and leave who wins the rumored titles as a surprise?

Then again, do I really want this feud to carry on in any way shape or form?

What would be the is the lesser of two evils?
