There's no debating that the last couple of years in wrestling have been nothing short of chaotic. With the returns of legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, massive firings, Vince McMahon retiring, and the infamous brawl out in AEW, wrestling fans have witnessed some of the most game-changing events in the sport's history. As the door closes in 2023, it's only fitting that we look forward to what could be another hectic year for wrestling in 2024.

WWE, specifically, has gained immense momentum over the past year after the departure of Vince McMahon and Triple H taking over creative control of Monday Night Raw and SmackDown. Now that the company is under the TKO banner along with UFC, it's understandable that all eyes are on what the landscape will be like in WWE once 2024 reaches its end and who the faces of it will end up being. For those reasons, there is much to look forward to for WWE in 2024, and these five in particular could be at the top of most fans' lists.

1. UFC and WWE playing in the same sandbox

NYSE

On September 12, 2023, Endeavor, the parent company of UFC, announced that it would combine the mega-mixed martial arts brand with the WWE to form TKO. The merger meant that Endeavor would own 51% of the new company and that WWE shareholders would own 49%. With a blockbuster sports merger like this, it's only a matter of time before fans of both companies see some cross-promotion between them.

Are we bound to see more UFC stars appear on WWE television and possibly set up future storylines with the likes of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and others? Fans have already seen WWE talents like Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker appear on UFC events. Lesnar, of course, is arguably the most successful superstar who has fought in both companies. It wouldn't be the strangest thing in the world for a UFC fighter like Connor McGregor to appear in a segment with Reigns on SmackDown next year. It not only gives the UFC a chance to promote an upcoming battle involving McGregor on pay-per-view but also reinforces the idea that both companies are playing in the same sandbox.

2. More overseas premium live events

Courtesy of WWE

This past year, the WWE delivered premium live events in more global territories. After the success of events like Elimination Chamber and Backlash, the company is looking to replicate that success with even more PLEs outside of the United States.

Currently, there are three major events scheduled in 2024 that will take place in foreign countries. On February 24th, WWE will present the Elimination Chamber in Perth, Australia. The company will travel to Lyon, France, three months later for Backlash. Finally, a new PLE called Bash in Berlin will occur in Berlin, Germany, in late August. With so many overseas events next year, one has to wonder whether fans will soon see a WrestleMania outside of the U.S.

3. WWE shows on new networks

Courtesy of CW and WWE

This past year, it was announced that SmackDown and NXT will air on new networks in 2024. NXT, which previously aired Tuesdays on the USA network, will debut on the CW in October as part of a five-year deal. The move is interesting since the company, for months, has tried to garner attention for the black and gold brand by sending over some of their major stars like Cody Rhodes, John Cena, and even The Undertaker to appear on the show. The CW has traditionally been targeted at a much younger demographic, so it's the perfect home for a brand that spotlights the future stars in the company.

Meanwhile, SmackDown is set to move away from FOX and air exclusively on the USA network. The deal also includes four WWE-produced primetime specials per year that will air on NBC. SmackDown moving to another network isn't new, as the show has moved several times throughout its television history.

While these moves are exciting, there is still one major unknown regarding WWE's TV rights deal: where will Monday Night Raw air in 2024? As of this writing, WWE's flagship show has yet to secure a new home for next year despite its broadcasting deal with USA Network, which is set to expire in October. Recent rumors suggest that the show could find a new home at Warner Bros Discovery, which currently has a broadcasting deal with WWE's primary competitor, AEW. However, it's been reported that AEW's deal with WBD is set to expire in December next year, so there may be discussions being made between WBD and WWE that fans aren't privy to.

4. Free agents in-coming

Courtesy of New Japan Pro-Wrestling

2024 could see many free agents looking to make their mark in WWE. One of the significant names some fans believe could make his debut in the future is New Japan pro-wrestling legend Kazuchika Okada. The former NJPW Heavyweight champion is set to become a free agent in January. Although Okada has previously wrestled for AEW and would more likely sign with the company, there is every chance that WWE Chief Creative Officer Triple H is looking to include the Japanese legend in his creative plans next year.

Elsewhere, former WWE women's champion Mercedes Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks, may return to the company after a two-year absence. Since departing from WWE following the controversial walk-out with former tag partner Naomi, the Boss has become a significant name in Japan, wrestling for both Stardom and New Japan. With a new creative team at the helm and the company entering WrestleMania season, it's time for the Boss to return and show again why many fans consider her one of the best female wrestlers in the modern era.

Lastly, there is the current AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman, who has arguably become the company's top babyface. While all signs point to MJF resigning with AEW, there is still the possibility that the "bidding war of 2024" ends with him stepping foot inside a WWE ring soon. The one major obstacle standing in the way is Tony Khan, who probably is looking to keep as many of his top talent in his company as possible and wants them all to re-enter negotiations. For a successful talent like MJF, one has to wonder whether he should continue to be AEW's biggest babyface or finally make perhaps the biggest move in his career and sign with WWE.

5. The year that Roman Reigns will lose his crown?

Courtesy of WWE

One big question that many WWE fans had after last year's WrestleMania was whether the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns would continue to dominate as champion going into 2024. The Tribal Chief defended his championship only a handful of times in 2023, which has led some fans to question the legitimacy of his lengthy title reign. Now that Reigns has passed three years as the champ and with WrestleMania 40 right around the corner, there is the possibility the WWE is ready for the Tribal Chief to finally give up his crown to another worthy superstar. But to whom?

The obvious answer would be the American Nightmare Cody Rhodes, who lost to Reigns at WrestleMania last year. Rhodes has repeatedly stated that he wants to win the WWE Championship and fulfill his career quest of "finishing the story." However, with the return of significant names such as Randy Orton and CM Punk, Rhodes may not be the guy to finally take down the Head of the Table.

There's also the glaring proposition of having the Braham Bull, The Rock, be the one to take the WWE Championship away from his cousin at WrestleMania. The Rock recently stated a match between himself and Reigns was "locked in" for WrestleMania 39 in Hollywood, but creative holes caused the anticipated showdown to be put on hold. With WrestleMania 40 being in Philadelphia and the WWE now on one of the hottest streaks it ever has been, perhaps the showdown between The Rock and Roman Reigns is becoming more of a possibility sooner rather than later.

While there are many threats to Reigns' championship, there is also the scary chance that WWE would want the Tribal Chief to survive as champ past 2024. If that happens, he'll be way past Hulk Hogan's championship reign of 1,474 days. It's just something to consider going into next year.

AEW Worlds End 2023 Results

Coverage will start as soon as the pre-show begins. Stay tuned!

ZERO HOUR:

Kris Statlander vs. Willow Nightingale

RESULT: Willow Nightingale won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Solid enough for a match that exists just to get them on the card in Long Island.

20-Man Battle Royale

RESULT: Killswitch won by tossing out Trent Beretta last.
THOUGHTS: Battle royals are always fun, so yes, I enjoyed this.

FTW Rules Match for the FTW Championship: Hook (c) vs. Wheeler Yuta

RESULT: Hook retained by submission.
THOUGHTS: Smashy smashy. I enjoy FTW Rules matches with Hook. Throw in Yuta, who I also like, and you've got a winning formula.

MAIN CARD:

All Star Eight-Man Tag Team Match: Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, Daniel Garcia and Mark Briscoe vs. Brody King, Jay Lethal, Jay White and Rush

RESULT: Daniel Garcia gets the win for his team by pinfall over Jay Lethal.
THOUGHTS: Good match, but it didn't need to go on for a half hour. This could've been 15 minutes maximum.

Andrade El Idolo vs. Miro

RESULT: Miro won by pinfall after CJ Perry turned on Andrade.
THOUGHTS: Honestly, I was bored. I was more interested in the potential of Andrade no-selling this match or something. But they just wrestled a normal match. He did business. It was just flat and uninteresting business that went on far longer than it should have. Again, we're 50 minutes into this event for these two matches that could have taken up only 30 minutes.

Singles Match for the AEW Women's World Championship: "Timeless" Toni Storm (c) vs. Riho

RESULT: Toni Storm retained by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Snooze. Uphill battle, here. I'm sick (still) and very tired, and this isn't keeping my attention. I didn't really care about this match to begin with, and again, it went on longer than it needed to, in my mind.

Dustin Rhodes vs. Swerve Strickland

RESULT: Swerve Strickland won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Obviously, this wasn't the scheduled match. But hey, maybe it's a sign that you should've just done the Keith Lee match MONTHS AGO when this feud made sense to do it? I don't get why they kept putting that off. This match went on way too long. Why do an injury angle and then a 10+ minute match for THIS match, and not some main event type thing?

Eight-Man Tag Team Match: Big Bill, Ricky Starks and The Don Callis Family (Konosuke Takeshita and Powerhouse Hobbs) vs. Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Darby Allin and Sting

RESULT: Sammy Guevara pins Ricky Starks to get the win for his team.
THOUGHTS: Overall, decent. Some slow moments. Sting struggled. Jericho sapped some energy out of this. But whatever, it was fine.

Singles Match for the AEW TBS Championship: Julia Hart (c) vs. Abadon

RESULT: Julia Hart retained by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Not good...

No Disqualification Match for the AEW TNT Championship: Christian Cage (c) vs. Adam Copeland

RESULT: Adam Copeland won the title by pinfall!

Right after the match, Killswitch went after Copeland. Cage convinced Killswitch to give up his TNT title shot to him. A new match restarts and Cage hits a spear to recapture his title.

RESULT: Christian Cage won the title back by pinfall.

THOUGHTS: Good match with an unfortunate botch of the flaming table spot, and a funny swerve with the title change situation.

AEW Continental Classic Tournament Final: Eddie Kingston (c) vs. Jon Moxley

RESULT: Eddie Kingston won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Chops and punches and whatnot, as expected. I enjoyed it. I'm glad Kingston won, too, even though I hate his finisher.

Singles Match for the AEW World Championship: MJF (c) vs. Samoa Joe

RESULT: Samoa Joe won the title by submission.
THOUGHTS: That ending was super flat. I'm glad Joe is champion, but I wouldn't have booked that to be the finish. It sucked the wind out of everything, and not in a good way.

The Devil's crew pops up and lo and behold, as expected, Adam Cole reveals himself to be The Devil. The other 4 are Wardlow, Roderick Strong, Matt Taven and Mike Bennett. They beat down on MJF to end the show.

AEW Worlds End 2023 Spoilers

Singles Match for the AEW World Championship: MJF (c) vs. Samoa Joe

Honestly, as great as Samoa Joe is, I was hoping for something a little more bombastic for this match. We've seen them feuding for a bit, and to just go back around to that (even with the knowledge in mind that this definitely hasn't all played out the way they wanted, after Adam Cole's injury)...I don't know. This thing with The Devil has been a drag more than a fun ride. The most interesting scenario here is for MJF to drop the title, which makes sense if they want to tease that he's leaving the company. But I think he's re-signed, and that there's a good chance he simply retains and all that mystery goes away. Now, if he's injured, there's even more of a reason to have him drop the title, so he can take some time off and build up that speculation that he's gone. I'm starting to think that will happen, but I'm not convinced. If it does, hey, I'm a big fan of Samoa Joe, too, so that'd be cool to see him as champion.

PREDICTION: I'm 50/50 on this, slightly leaning toward MJF retaining just because I feel like Joe should win and it wouldn't shock me if he didn't.

AEW Continental Classic Tournament Final: Eddie Kingston (c) vs. Jon Moxley

I remain hesitant to trust this whole Triple Crown thing will be a good idea. It just seems like it's flawed from the start, with how they're going to defend 3 titles and not potentially break them up over time, and have them tied into a yearly tournament. I also just don't like the name Continental Championship, as it seems like this should just be the International Championship. Anyway, Kingston should win this. Not only is the underdog idea better to go with, and having him win in New York is a better option than if he lost, but he's the whole reason two of the belts are on the line. Why transition it all to Mox just before he goes to Wrestle Kingdom to challenge for the Global Championship?

PREDICTION: Eddie Kingston wins.

AEW Women's World Championship Match: "Timeless" Toni Storm (c) vs. Riho

I know that on paper, Riho is the first-ever women's world champion in AEW, so this should be at least a match where the challenger is worthwhile, if not how some people out there will be convinced that she stands any chance to beat Storm. But let's be honest. This is low-effort filler. I haven't bought into Riho winning a match that's worthwhile in years. Even when she was champion, it felt more like she was given that distinction for the sake of it, rather than being the best possible option at the time. She's cooled off considerably since then, and we all know Storm isn't dropping that belt any time soon, so then, it becomes a factor of whether or not I'm willing to suspend my disbelief and just go with how enjoyable the match will be. That's where you'll hate me even more for saying I just don't think I'll love this. So the whole thing turns into an overwhelming "meh" for me, and I would skip it if I could, but since it'll be live, I guess I'll just have to type out "Toni Storm retained by pinfall" well in advance and wait to hit the publish button on that result.

PREDICTION: Toni Storm retains.

Singles Match for the AEW TBS Championship: Julia Hart (c) vs. Abadon

No way is Julia Hart losing the title this fast, especially not to Abadon. Abadon's just a zombie being fed to a witch. That's a sentence I didn't think I'd necessarily write.

PREDICTION: Julia Hart retains.

FTW Rules Match for the FTW Championship: Hook (c) vs. Wheeler Yuta

These guys are fun, FTW Rules is a good stipulation, and since there's a chance Yuta does win the belt, that means this isn't some foregone conclusion. Cool. I'm down for this more than most of the card, actually. Most likely, I'd be down to see a rematch for the Pure Championship, too.

PREDICTION: Hook retains.

No Disqualification Match for the AEW TNT Championship: Christian Cage (c) vs. Adam Copeland

Doing a rematch gives me the vibe that Copeland is winning this belt, but Tony Khan wanted to delay it and milk it for a few more segments, for whatever endgame reasoning. Maybe the No DQ gimmick is how Cage retains, though. It depends on if there will be interference on Edge's behalf or if it's entirely just going to be Nick Wayne and company helping out Cage.

PREDICTION: Adam Copeland wins.

Quick predictions for a few other matches added to the card:

  • Swerve Strickland beats Keith Lee. This match should've happened months ago.
  • I don't care about Andrade vs. Miro. Flip a coin.
  • The babyfaces (Chris Jericho, Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara and Sting) likely beat Big Bill, Ricky Starks, Kyle Fletcher and Powerhouse Hobbs. Filler match. Meh.
  • Nobody's been announced for the 20-man battle royale, but since the winner gets a TNT Championship match, and I'm thinking Edge wins, then it could be almost anyone that he simply wants to wrestle at some point. These are easy matches to book when someone wins a title shot, they wrestle on TV, and then move on to an actual feud after that. So...let's say...Jay White wins.

This page will be altered on a regular basis to reflect changes to the show including any new matches added to the lineup, adjustments to the card, revised predictions and any other information about this event. Stay tuned for the latest updates!

Welcome to another edition of POWER RANKINGS from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we will break down the current roster and examine who has gone up the WWE hierarchy and who has unfortunately taken a step down the ladder. Factoring in things such as wins and losses, suspensions, injuries, making a name for oneself, being humiliated, and more, who is at the top of the food chain and who needs to make up some ground next week?

Here is the key code for the rankings shorthand when referencing their position in relation to the previous week:

NR = Not included in last week's rankings at all

+ Green = the number of moves up in the rankings compared to last week

- Red = the number of moves down in the rankings compared to last week

Honorable Mentions = five superstars who just barely missed the cut

Power Ranking WWE wrestlers list roster

10. Michin [NR]

In SmackDown's Holiday Havoc tag, Michin scored the decisive pin for the babyface team over Damage CTRL, and by beating Iyo Sky may have earned a future WWE Women's Championship opportunity.

9. Imperium [NR]

Gunther's second straight Intercontinental Championship defense against The Miz means the A-Lister can no longer challenge for the title. However, his win was somewhat tempered by Imperium's Ludwig Kaiser falling to Jey Uso later in the show.

8. Seth Rollins [-5]

No in-ring action for Seth Rollins, instead having a face-to-face confrontation with Drew McIntyre ahead of their upcoming championship rematch.

7. Judgment Day [NR]

While JD McDonagh suffered a surprise, comedy loss to R-Truth, Finn Balor & Damian Priest did manage to fight off the eager challenge of The Creed Brothers to retain their WWE Tag Team Championships.

6. Katana Chance & Kayden Carter [NR]

However, the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships did change hands on Raw, as Katana Chance & Kayden Carter captured the belts from Chelsea Green & Piper Niven.

5. Drew McIntyre [-3]

As noted earlier, Drew McIntyre was solely involved in a promo exchange with Seth Rollins on Raw, adding some layers before their World Heavyweight Championship clash.

4. Kevin Owens [+6]

Kevin Owens proceeded to the finals of the United States Championship contender's tournament, defeating Carmelo Hayes in the semi-final on SmackDown.

3. Santos Escobar [+4]

Joining Kevin Owens in the US tournament final is Santos Escobar as, thanks to the interference of his new cohorts Angel Garza & Humberto Carrillo, he overcame Bobby Lashley.

2. Randy Orton [-1]

No match, but Randy Orton took part in a main event brawl with LA Knight and AJ Styles leading into next week's Triple Threat number one contender's match.

1. Dragon Lee [+4]

Dragon Lee leaps to the top of the Power Rankings with back-to-back defenses of his North American Championship. First, Lee defeated Charlie Dempsey and Joe Coffey in a Triple Threat on NXT, then he beat Butch on SmackDown.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

R-Truth - In his ongoing bid to join Judgment Day, R-Truth defeated JD McDonagh in a Miracle on 34th Street Fight on Raw.

Jey Uso - It was a long time coming, but Jey Uso finally won his first singles match since joining Raw over Imperium's Ludwig Kaiser.

Fallon Henley - In a surprise result, Fallon Henley beat former NXT Women's Champion Tiffany Stratton on Tuesday's show.

Lexis King - The NXT Men's Breakout Tournament continued on Tuesday with Lexis King advancing past Dion Lennox.

Tavion Heights - Later in the night, Tavion Heights rounded off the Breakout semi-finalists with his victory over Luca Crusifino.

The Power Rankings Table (since WrestleMania 39)

  1. Judgment Day - 36 weeks (16 weeks at #1)
  2. Seth Rollins - 28 weeks (3 weeks at #1)
  3. Kevin Owens - 20 weeks (4 weeks at #1)
  4. Santos Escobar - 19 weeks (4 weeks at #1)
  5. Sami Zayn - 18 weeks (4 weeks at #1)
  6. Damage CTRL - 17 weeks (1 week at #1)
  7. Imperium - 16 weeks
  8. LWO - 15 weeks (4 weeks at #1)
  9. Becky Lynch - 14 weeks (2 weeks at #1)
  10. Bianca Belair - 13 weeks (4 weeks at #1)

Do you think anyone should be listed differently?

What can these Superstars do to get back up at the #1 spot?
