WWE Championship: Triple H won the Royal Rumble match on January 24 to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Roman Reigns. Roman Reigns defeated Triple H at WrestleMania 32 on April 3. Seth Rollins defeated Reigns at Money in the Bank on June 19. Dean Ambrose cashed in Money in the Bank immediately afterward. AJ Styles defeated Ambrose at Backlash on September 11.
WWE Universal Championship: Finn Balor defeated Seth Rollins at SummerSlam on August 21 to become the inaugural Universal Champion. Balor vacated/relinquished the title due to injury on Raw on August 22. Kevin Owens won the vacant title on Raw on August 29.
