WWE Payback 2023 Results

Steel Cage Match: Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus

RESULT: Becky Lynch won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: It took a bit to get started. Once it did, it was better than I had anticipated. Good job on both. They did some spots I wasn't expecting and I enjoyed the Manhandle Slam off the top rope finish. Thumbs up.

LA Knight vs. The Miz — special guest referee John Cena

RESULT: LA Knight won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Fun enough segment for me. Nothing too crazy awesome, but it got the job done.

Singles Match for United States Championship: Rey Mysterio (c) vs. Austin Theory

RESULT: Rey Mysterio retained by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: It looked like something was going on with Rey tonight. He was off a step from his entrance all throughout the match. This was slower in moments it shouldn't have been, had some sloppy parts to it and just wasn't all that generally impressive or meaningful since obviously nothing happened other than Rey retaining after a needless rematch.

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Steel City Street Fight: Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens (c) vs. The Judgment Day (Damian Priest and Finn Balor)

RESULT: The Judgment Day won the titles by pinfall!
THOUGHTS: This was a very fun match. I enjoyed it a lot. Granted, I'm not sure I'd go with Priest and Balor as the tag champs, as I don't love that they're already well into a few months of tension and NOW they're winning the titles, but this is WWE. They love that story more than anything else in this division. So that's not too shocking. Owens and Zayn look strong in their loss by The Judgment Day needing 3 other people to help them. Clearly, Sami and Kevin have no friends willing to help them out, though.

Grayson Waller Effect with Cody Rhodes

RESULT: Cody announced that he used some of his stroke backstage to get Jey Uso as the newest member of the Monday Night Raw roster.
THOUGHTS: Huh? Okay. The crowd popped huge for it, but I'm curious what this story is all about.

Singles Match for Women's World Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Raquel Rodriguez

RESULT: Rhea Ripley retained by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Meh. It was fine. I wish the crowd was more into it as that would have helped, even though we all knew Raquel wasn't going to win.

Singles Match for World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

RESULT: Seth Rollins retained by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Rather standard match. Good, but not groundbreaking. Thumbs up overall for a B-level pay-per-view and the C-tier world title in a rushed feud where you knew the outcome before the match was even officially made.

WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN? LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS BELOW!

WWE Payback 2023 is scheduled to take place at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 2, 2023. Follow along here for spoilers and information on the event's card, lineup of matches and news regarding the pay-per-view.

The following are my predictions for the 2023 WWE Payback PPV. Check back for Payback 2023 results and review coverage here when the time comes.

WWE Payback 2023 Spoilers

Singles Match for World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

You know how this title was immediately considered the B-championship, backup belt, "I can't beat Roman Reigns consolation prize" and whatnot? Well, not having it main event any shows until Roman Reigns wasn't on the card, and having feuds like this definitely don't help fight against that accusation.

Look. It's brutally honest and blunt, but it should be said. Shinsuke Nakamura is great and I wish things would have gone differently with his Royal Rumble and WrestleMania track. He should've beaten AJ Styles. That would have been cool. But from that loss onward, he's NEVER felt like a big enough deal to become champion. And he stands absolutely no chance to win the title here unless Triple H was thinking to himself "This is my chance to give the title to people that I've always liked and I can just get it on the record books before Endeavor potentially vetoes any of those suggestions."

But that's not going to happen. Nakamura's just been given the bare minimum of a hype boost to challenge for the belt because they needed another opponent for Rollins and want to save some other names for bigger events. He's basically been given a shot of adrenaline just to be fed to Rollins.

It's that simple. The match will be good, but by this point next year, you'll likely forget these two even feuded. At least we aren't getting ANOTHER Judgment Day match.

PREDICTION: Seth Rollins retains.

Singles Match for Women's World Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Raquel Rodriguez

Poor Raquel. Up until they started this feud, I had her down as a potential option to dethrone Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania, with the hope that WWE would start actually building her up in time to win the Royal Rumble. Instead, they're doing this right now, and that means in my mind that we're definitely getting Ripley vs. Lynch and Rodriguez is going to remain to be relegated to the tag team division, as Raquel just isn't going to win this belt here.

PREDICTION: Rhea Ripley retains.

Steel Cage Match: Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus

Can this feud FINALLY end? It's gone on way too long for what its quality has been. They milked an extra 4 months out of it, almost. Let's just have Zoey Stark try to interfere despite the cage (because the idea of the cage keeping people out ALWAYS leads to the opposite; it's a rule of wrestling) only to be intercepted by Lita so she can get some revenge on Trish attacking her.

PREDICTION: Becky Lynch wins.

Singles Match for United States Championship: Rey Mysterio (c) vs. Austin Theory

Lackluster and bland. I don't even think Rey should be champion right now at all, considering WWE could have gone with Santos Escobar or LA Knight. To do a rematch is the laziest thing they could have as a response from Mysterio winning the title. Austin Theory's not going to win it back. This is a waste in a lot of ways.

PREDICTION: Rey Mysterio retains.

Grayson Waller Effect with Cody Rhodes

I hate it when they have promos on pay-per-views. That goes double when the two people aren't even on the same roster and have no connection and no need to do this whatsoever. Waller's got more going on with Mysterio now. So we're just killing time before Waller vs. Mysterio at Fastlane, I guess.

In the meanwhile, they're also killing time with Cody because I guess they have nothing in mind for him. STILL. After all these months, can we not finally acknowledge that Roman Reigns should've dropped that belt at WrestleMania? The Bloodline has been milked longer than they had proper content for, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens were pushed aside as tag champs, and Cody's been bouncing around with no real goals in mind (other than "to have 3 matches with Brock Lesnar"). All of this could be so much better.

PREDICTION: Blah blah nothing really happens of note.

LA Knight vs. The Miz

Having this cross-branded feud going on just makes me think that WWE once again flat out doesn't care about the brand split despite all their posturing about how the draft would have a true separation. But hey, I'm a big fan of both LA Knight and The Miz, so does it still get a thumbs up from me? YEAH! Here's hoping WWE doesn't treat this as "just as good of a push as any other" and he actually gets something like a United States title reign in the coming future.

PREDICTION: LA Knight wins.

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Steel City Street Fight: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn (c) vs. The Judgment Day (Damian Priest and Finn Balor)

Couldn't even go with the more interesting situation of Finn Balor teaming with JD McDonagh? We all know Priest and Balor as a team won't win. They've been telling the story of those two having issues and failing to team together for about 2 months, right? So this just means they'll fail again for the same reason. It's a copy/paste stall. I have to say that phrase WAY too much in WWE booking analysis. Move on to the feud already.

Update: At least making it a street fight boosts the quality of the segment. It will be a much more fun match this way.

PREDICTION: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn retain.

WWE Payback 2020 Results

Kickoff Match: The IIconics vs. The Riott Squad

RESULTS: The Riott Squad won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Nothing interesting going on except how WWE randomly decided to revert all the friendship stuff back to "eh...maybe they're not on the same page" for a bit.

United States Championship Match: Apollo Crews (c) vs. Bobby Lashley

RESULTS: Bobby Lashley won the title by submission
THOUGHTS: Very glad Lashley won the title. That was the next logical course for this belt to take. The match itself was fine—nothing super duper amazing, but nothing bad. What's more important is the finish and they did that right.

Backstage, JBL gave Keith Lee a "pep talk" of sorts with some hedge fund information and told him he'll have the means to use that information once he wins his first big match on Raw. However, he shouldn't feel too bad if he loses, since Randy Orton's one of the best.

Big E vs. Sheamus

RESULTS: Big E won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Remember how Sheamus lost twice to Big E recently? This was just the third. Nothing much more than that to it. The match was good enough. It's not their fault Creative hasn't given them more value to this story.

Alyse Ashton interviews Matt Riddle, who seems taken aback by Corbin's tweet about Riddle being a failure at home.

Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler talk backstage. Jax is positive they'll beat Bayley and Sasha Banks if Shayna follows Nia's lead. Shayna says they'll win if Nia stays out of her way. They shove each other and agree to stop talking and just warm up.

King Corbin vs. Matt Riddle

RESULTS: Matt Riddle won by pinfall
THOUGHTS: Solid match. No complaints. The right guy won and the action leading up to that point was thumbs up material from my end.

Corbin attacked Riddle backstage after the match.

WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Match: The Golden Role Models (c) vs. Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler

RESULTS: Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler won the titles by submission
THOUGHTS: Not a bad segment. I'm hesitant to trust the new champions will head in a great direction, but hey, at least we're one step closer to finally getting that Banks vs Bayley feud over with.

Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton

RESULTS: Keith Lee won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Shocked they gave Keith Lee a clean pin. I also felt this match was just getting started. This was pretty short, wasn't it?

Dominik Mysterio and Rey Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins and Murphy

RESULTS: Dominik and Rey Mysterio won by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: If this were the first match these teams had together, it'd be fine. But after feuding for months, it just isn't good enough to keep me interested. At least the Mysterios didn't lose again and Dominik got the pin.

Universal Championship No Holds Barred Triple Threat Match: Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns

RESULTS: #AndNew universal champion, Roman Reigns by pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Terribly flawed match as far as the booking goes. This made no sense. Reigns being champion is interesting, but the writers aren't doing a good job with telling that story.

WWE Payback 2020 Spoilers

Universal Championship No Holds Barred Triple Threat Match: Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns

It's too obvious to just have Reigns win the title right away, right? Surely, WWE will try to milk this a bit more by having Braun Strowman take another pin from Wyatt so they can stretch it out and do a singles match between Reigns and Wyatt at Clash of Champions, at least.

PREDICTION: Roman Reigns is winning that title either here or soon after.

United States Championship Match: Apollo Crews (c) vs. Bobby Lashley

PREDICTION: Bobby Lashley wins the title.

WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Match: The Golden Role Models (c) vs. Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler

Curious why they're going with Jax and Baszler, instead of Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott. I guess they're following the typical WWE model of only caring about the tag titles if there's a singles feud within it. That way, they can have a transitional reign and when they want to split Jax and Baszler, they'll fight and they can hit us with the incessant "You know, they were tag team champions together and now they're fighting!?" stuff.

PREDICTION: Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler win the titles.

Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton

Keith Lee is amazing (outside of his generic ass new music and stupid ring gear). Randy Orton's doing the best work he's done in years. If I hadn't already JUST seen this match on Raw THIS WEEK, I would be a lot more into it. Still, these two are good enough to overcome the hurdles WWE is putting in front of them. Here's hoping they don't make Lee a stepping stone for Orton to get another title match with Drew McIntyre.

Dominik and Rey Mysterio vs. Murphy and Seth Rollins

Rematch after rematch after rematch. They just did this on Raw and they had a non-finish so they could do it again. I don't care.

King Corbin vs. Matt Riddle

They had to do this. If they had spent this long waiting and skipped ANOTHER pay-per-view, it would be beyond ridiculous. I've talked about this feud (and many others) enough over the past 2 months where I have nothing else to say, really.

Big E vs. Sheamus

We've seen it and we've seen them in a tag team match. This match has no extra stipulations or gimmicks to make it interesting. It's just literally the same match we've seen before, but this time, you've seen it. I like both guys, but WWE has to stop with this "that....again....my job is done." mentality.

PREDICTION: Big E wins. Or Sheamus wins. It doesn't matter.

+ possibly more matches TBA they might add at literally the last minute on the day of the event in some fashion via The Bump or the kickoff (annoying)

Here are some matches I can imagine WWE booking on this card:

• Jeff Hardy defending the IC title (maybe in a rematch against AJ Styles or against Sami Zayn)
• Maybe something with Heavy Machinery and The Miz and John Morrison
• Tag team titles on the line?
• Maybe MVP and Shelton Benjamin against Ricochet and Cedric Alexander?
• Aleister Black vs. Kevin Owens

THOUGHTS: Meh. Generic Monday Night Raw style match for filler.

Backstage, The Hardy Boyz are talking to each other in the locker room about their plans for tonight's title defense. The Golden Truth pop up to chat and welcome them back. They also want to issue a challenge to the winners of the tag team match tonight.

Cesaro and Sheamus are in the social media lounge. Charly Caruso looks great as always. Nothing really to report on.

THOUGHTS: Well that was a segment. It really didn't do anything for anybody.

United States Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs. Chris Jericho

RESULT: Chris Jericho wins the championship via submission!
THOUGHTS: Wow....I did not see that happening at all.

Cruiserweight Championship Match: Neville (c) vs. Austin Aries

RESULT: Austin Aries via disqualification.
THOUGHTS: Hm. That was disappointing.

Raw Tag Team Championship Match: The Hardy Boyz (c) vs. Cesaro and Sheamus

RESULT: The Hardy Boyz retain via pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Jeff Hardy lost a tooth in this match.

After the match, Sheamus and Cesaro turn heel by attacking Matt and Jeff.

Raw Women's Championship Match: Bayley (c) vs. Alexa Bliss

RESULT: Alexa Bliss via pinfall
THOUGHTS: Another title change I didn't see coming! What's happening here?!

House of Horrors Match: Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

RESULT: The pre-recorded video segment airs and it's stupid as hell. It ends with Bray Wyatt getting in a limo after he throws a refrigerator on top of Orton.

Seth Rollins vs. Samoa Joe

RESULT: Seth Rollins via pinfall.
THOUGHTS: Eh...I was hoping this would be better, honestly.

House of Horrors Match: Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

RESULT: Bray Wyatt wins after some help from Jinder Mahal and The Singh Brothers
THOUGHTS: This was so stupid, but I did like how Jinder Mahal got a chance to look like he's a more credible threat. The whole idea of the match was just dumb, though.

Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns

RESULT: Braun Strowman wins via pinfall.
THOUGHTS: SO glad Strowman won!
