Is Seth Rollins Better as a Heel or a Babyface?

Posted by Anthony Mango Thursday, June 12, 2014
HEEL OR FACE is a specialty segment wherein we break down a particular wrestler and discuss their strengths and weaknesses on the Good vs Evil scale. There are three questions that are brought up in this: 1) are they better as a heel or a face, 2) should they turn from what they currently are, and 3) how would you turn them?

The fourth entry in this series is going to focus on someone who has been both a heel and a face twice in his WWE career so far. He recently turned against his babyface stablemates The Shield and aligned himself with Triple H, turning heel. Was it a smart decision to become a villain again, or was he better as a hero?

SETH ROLLINS

A) BETTER AS A HEEL OR A FACE?

Unfortunately, I was not able to check out much of Seth Rollins in NXT, nor am I too familiar with his work in Ring of Honor as Tyler Black. What I did see, I thought was kind of bland in terms of a babyface gimmick. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't anything special. I had similar thoughts when he made his debut with The Shield and was a heel. It didn't click to me and I kept thinking that maybe he wasn't even sure of what he should do, as he would perform babyface-style moves as a heel and such. Luckily, my opinion of him changed over time, and I became fond of his work as a heel (along with my impression of the other two Shield members growing as well).

When he turned babyface with The Shield, though, that stepped up even more. I'm enjoying his current heel turn much more than his first go-around, but if I'm honest, I think I liked him as a babyface from the past few months even more. This is still very fresh, so even as quick as a month from now, I may end up eating my words and saying that he's a far better heel, but for now, I'm going to say that in general, Seth Rollins is someone I prefer as a babyface and I hope that he gets a long stint as one down the line.

B) SHOULD HE TURN?

No. This heel turn is far too fresh and it seems to have gone over too well for it to just be retconned like that. Seth Rollins could end up becoming so much stronger because of this when he eventually turns face. People got behind him as a face before twice and they could do it again, but after this heel turn, they will be craving it more.

C) HOW WOULD I TURN HIM?

I wouldn't turn Rollins face until at least after WrestleMania and that is so far off that I can't even imagine a scenario of how I would turn him. He could probably do the same thing that he did with this heel turn, but the opposite route, and it would go over fantastically.
